What’s it all about?

By The Way is a companion to The News Café, offering news and feature stories that I believe will be of interest — many of them the result of reader suggestions. Some of the stories are picked up and published by traditional media, while news outlets deem other stories to be too local or not likely to have wide readership. Those stories appear only in By The Way.

Because, unlike most media outlets, we do not rely on advertising or grants, we are able to direct our focus to anything interesting, without worrying about offending an advertiser or conforming to grant requirements. That is why support for our efforts is so important. If you like what we’re doing, please give what you can to sustain the effort.

Unlike The News Café, where everything is available to all readers, whether or not they choose to support the work through paid subscriptions, By The Way requires a paid subscription for access to the complete articles. Those choosing a free subscription still will receive previews of the stories. So, as with all of my content on Substack, financial support is up to you.
