MEREDITH —The Inter-Lakes School Board unanimously approved Superintendent Mary Moriarty’s interim administrative plan for Inter-Lakes Elementary School that reassigns staff members to fill the principal and assistant principal slots vacated following a student’s assault of a teacher.

Principal Michael Bryant and Assistant Principal Stephanie Howard resigned after being placed on leave following the September 21 assault.

Municipal Resources Incorporated is conducting an independent investigation into the assault, but the results have not been released.

Statistics of student discipline problems show Inter-Lakes having far fewer incidents than other school districts in the state, but Moriarty acknowledged that “Comparing districts is an oversimplification of a complex topic, especially when comparing to a small district such as Inter-Lakes. Each reported incident is different. Each incident may have numerous factors unrelated to other incidents. We work diligently to ensure our students remain safe in a positive environment, and to de-escalate potentially difficult situations whenever possible.”

Currently, former ILES principal Steven Kelley is sharing principal duties with Sandwich Central School Principal Jeremy Hillger, while Kathleen Hill, a past Sandwich principal, district curriculum coordinator, and interim ILES principal, is acting as assistant principal.
